 Beginners’ Guide to Building Themes

Thinking about design

The biggest mistake designers commit (myself included) when starting a new design is going straight in without too much thought. For novice ‘themers’ in particular, it is easy to fall into the trap of exercising your ideas as they enter your head and hope the rest follows. It is easier and more adviseable to spend a thought for your design before you even approach your computer. Get some concrete ideas down on paper.

You might have an inspired design of your own - in which case the design process is possibly the easiest part of the process. But if you haven’t, then look around for ideas. Do bear in mind, though, that some site owners protect their designs, so blatant copying isn’t a good idea.

Another factor to consider is your readership. You can create an appealing theme that is difficult to read. For example, those with red-green colourblindness won’t appreciate green text on a red background.

The best advice I can give is to look round and see for yourself what you feel makes a blog design appealing to you.
