Finishing your theme
Think your theme is finished? Actually, you’re probably wrong! Just when you think you’re done with your theme, chances are you will find something else that needs doing. If you have made the theme purely for your own site, this perhaps doesn’t matter so much.
However, if you have made this theme with public use in mind, your theme will always keep you on your toes. First of all, you should keep your theme up-to-date, with clear indications over which version of WordPress the theme is designed for. To that end, you should keep tabs on when the next version of WordPress is expected to be released, as it is likely there are new features that might clash with your theme.
Secondly, you might want to experiment with popular WordPress plugins to incorporate them into your theme. As a note, you should also be careful that your theme does not end up requiring those plugins for your theme to work: if function_exists( ) might be useful.
Now, if you feel you are done, then you can upload your design for real! Typically, you will need to transfer everything over into a new a folder in the .../wp-content/themes/ directory. Then activate it in the WordPress dashboard under the ‘Presentation’ tab and hope for the best! Then congratulations!
